The true art of fly fishing isn’t necessarily the casting; although it is an important piece of the puzzle. The true art and knowledge comes with knowing what kind of bait to use when and where you are fishing.

A lot of the bait that you use will have to do with the environmental, weather, sun, and local conditions. You need to find bugs that are indigenous to your local fishing areas and create fake fishing flies that look a lot like those local bugs.

The way that you need to go about finding the bugs that the fish are eating is to take a walk around your local lake, pound, or up and down the river. You should gather as many different specimens that are available.   Most likely, what you see is what the fish in your local are eating. It can be rather tough to go out and do this, but you are getting a huge edge on your local competition.   Chances are that most fishermen are not going about this process with their fishing.

Just think of how many fishermen that you see fly fishing for hours and not catching anything. There are a lot of fishermen that don’t have a clue.   When they think about fly fishing they think it’s all in the casting.  Well, actually your bait is more important. If you have the right bait, you can just drift fish until a fish bites.

It’s actually more important that you have the right bait as well as a solid reel so that you can bring the fish in when it bites.  You should look for a high quality reel like a Okuma slv or a Okuma Helios fly reel. This combined with the right bait will give you a huge leg up and allow you to catch more fish than any of the other local fly fishermen.

If you can’t afford a new and expensive reel then you can always find used fly reels with a little bit of effort.  And while you are out there don’t forget to take your rubber fly fishing boots with you to keep your feet dry.
