Perhaps the most widely requested procedure in the unofficial field of cosmetic dentistry is teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching. There are many available methods, such as at home teeth whitening and in the dentist’s office procedures.
The lasting effects can vary by procedure, and many external factors can shorten the time frame. Lack of proper dental hygiene, tobacco use, and alcohol use can all reverse the effects of both in office and at home whitening. At home methods are known to not be as effective as an office treatment. Memphis dental offices recommend speaking to an expert if you are unsure which method suits your needs.
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding teeth whitening is regarding the safety. The general consensus is yes, tooth whitening is safe. Unlike older and outdated methods of teeth bleaching it does not strip away tooth enamel to remove stains.
The methods do vary depending on what you have chosen though. The at home method is more financially friendly, generally costing anywhere from $30 to $40 for a complete kit, but you should be aware of some of the potential teeth whitening problems if you do it at home.
The kit will either contain a mouth tray and gel tubes, or simply adhesive strips with the gel already on each individual one. The mouth tray requires first being filled with the hydrogen peroxide based gel solution, and then being inserted in the mouth for about 15 minutes a day. The strips are applied directly to the teeth twice a day for 15 minutes at a time. Each method is used anywhere from a week to two weeks.
In office teeth whitening methods, as described by Memphis dentists, also uses the same hydrogen peroxide based solution. A highly concentrated laser light with then be shone onto each individual tooth. This process allows the solution and the light to work well below the tooth enamel to clean deep and otherwise permanent stains.
