A baby’s crib typically has the reputation of keeping the child safe and secure, but this will only last for a few years.  Eventually the child will have to transition from their crib to a regular bed.

A Checklist for Safely Constructed Wood Bunk Beds

A classic furniture item for a child’s bedroom is wood bunk beds. They’re great for saving space in smaller rooms, and they accommodate sleepovers easily if your child has his or her own room.

Safety is paramount when you’re bunk bed shopping. It’s important to buy quality with any furniture item, but more so with a bunk bed because your child will be sleeping on his mattress well above the floor level and not at floor level like on a daybed.

The heavier the construction, the more likely the bed will survive the abuse that kids tend to dish out. Heavier hardwood construction, such as oak or maple, is good, but without reinforced joints and corners, even hardwood bunks can wear and become loose over time.

Cherry wood is softer, but with quality construction, it can last as long as harder woods. Look for joints reinforced with metal parts, especially corner pieces. If you assemble the wooden bunk bed yourself, be sure you tighten each and every bolt, and check the assembly from time to make sure nothing has worked loose.

When shopping, pay close attention to the ladder, which is a danger point in any bunk bed set. The ladder should have sturdy, reinforced rungs and side rails, and the attachment hooks at the top should form a solid structure so they won’t slip loose while a child is climbing into the top bunk.

Finally, make sure the ensemble has a sturdy railing on the top bunk so that a child who tosses and turns while sleeping won’t risk rolling off the edge and suffering injury in a fall.

Until the novelty of sleeping in the top bunk wears off, it’s wise to supervise children at bedtime as they climb into the top bunk. Roughhousing, jumping, and climbing without a ladder should be discouraged. A little bit of caution allows you and your family to enjoy the benefits of wood bunk beds safely.
