A Pearl engagement ring is becoming a popular alternative to the typical and traditional diamond engagement ring. Its uniqueness is what draws many to choose it from the other rings. If you are one of those types of people who are drawn to looking at unique engagement rings, here are some guidelines for you to make sure that you are getting the best quality of pearl.

  • Check for blemishes on the pearl. Pearls have the tendency to soak up on other substances. This is because pearls are porous. If you found a blemish on the pearl of the ring, you can ask the jeweler to bluff it away. If it can’t be buffed away, look for another pearl instead.
  • Check for cracks. This is not a good sign if you have found a crack on the pearl, you may end up having some problems in the future with a cracked pearl.
  • Check for uniform luster. You can check this using a fluorescent light. Under the light, the pearl should look iridescent and whole.
  • Check on the authenticity of the pearl by performing the tooth test. A manufactured bead or imitation pearls will feel smooth against a tooth. If the pearl feels rough when doing the tooth test whether cultured or natural pearls, then it is a good sign.
  • Check on how thick the nacre is. If you do not know how to check this, you can ask the jeweler to explain it to you.
  • Check on the x-ray if you are buying natural pearls. You know that the pearl is cultured if in the x-ray it shows that there are irritants or bead in the center.

Pearl engagement rings need careful checking before buying. The last thing you want to happen is to get ripped off when you are buying one of the most important things for your special someone. Make sure to perform these checks and you will be able to have a safe feeling about the ring you are buying.
