Much has been said about green tea ever since it surfaced in the weight loss arena. Some people say it is effective while others say it is not. Some people say it is safe while others say it is not.

There is always two sides to every story. One of the main substances found in green tea is EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate. It is a substance which is seldom observed during human trials and it seems that it might have not so pleasant effects on the body.

This article will discuss green tea weight loss and the effects EGCG has on the body.

Indigestion and Nausea. For some people, consuming EGCG gives them an upset stomach or causes nausea.  There was a study in 1984 which found that tea stimulates gastric acid which causes stomach aches. To counter this, you can add milk or sugar to the beverage; however, this counters the effect of green tea extract for weight loss.

Neural Tube Defect. Drinking large amounts of green tea can lead to neural birth defects in babies.  A study conducted in the University of Murcia, Spain discovered that EGCG inhibits an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase or DHFR.

This is not a good thing for pregnant mothers because it can result to folic acid deficiency which may cause abnormal development of the baby. This is why it is advised that pregnant and lactating women eliminate green tea from their diet.

It is important that people who drink green tea be very careful. There is no clear recommended dosage so it is very easy for a person to drink more than what he should. So, be sure that you consult your physician before you start taking green tea. This is to make sure that green tea will not counteract with any medicine you are taking and green tea will not cause you any health problems.
