Avatar: The Last Airbender is a cartoon series created by Nickelodeon in 2005. The show had three seasons and was set in mythical Asia, and focused around the three main characters, Aang, Katara, and Soka.
The world in this series is divided into four nations, Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. People in avatar the last airbender episodes can bend the elements based on where they lived but the Avatar was the only one who could bend all four.
The story takes place after one hundred years of war with the Fire Nation, who wants to take over the world, and the last Avatar, Aang, who was an airbender, has disappeared. Katara and Soka find Aang and once they discover he is the Avatar they proceed on a journey to take down the Fire Lord, the king of the Fire Nation, and end the war and bring peace to the world.
Throughout the Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes, we meet characters such as Suko, the Fire Lord's banished son who wishes to capture Aang to restore his honor, Iroh, Suko's uncle who was also banished, and Toph, who appears in season 2, the blind daughter of a wealthy family who uses her feet to see the world around her and earth bend (she becomes Aang's earthbending teacher later in the series). Azula is also introduced at the end of season 1 as the sister of Suko and is sent after Aang after Suko and Iroh fail to attain Aang.
Nickelodeon received massive success with Avatar: The Last Airbender. This series caught on rather fast amongst Nickelodeons viewers because of the interesting story line and the many twists that the plot would take. The production quality was also fantastic and the characters developed at a reasonable pace, keeping the attention of the viewer.
The show is also very funny and entertaining. One might think of it as a cartoon soap opera. There was a movie made recently directed by critically-acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan, which did not go over so well with the fans of the show.
Nickelodeon has, however, planned a spinoff series based off of the series called Avatar: Legend of Korra, which will track the progress of the next Avatar, a water bender, which is set to premier November 2011. Many aspects of the original show are said to be present in the new series, which is planned to run only 12 episodes as a mini-series.
