You know how in the classic tale, The Little Mermaid, the sea princess longed to become a human? Well, a reversal of this story if happening all over the world right now -- more and more humans are longing for and becoming mermaids and mermen!
This fringe sport is going mainstream this year, with the mermaids and mermen now numbering into the thousands. Swimmers of all ages and walks of life are buying mermaid swim tails from online companies such as AquaTails. The tails come in all sorts of styles and gorgeous colors, with plenty of masculine offerings for the mermen as well.
Mermaid tails are made to custom-fit the swimmer, and most come with a monofin inside. The monofin, a large one-piece flipper, moves the mermaids and mermen through the water powerfully, like a real sea creature.
The tails sparkle and shine and make anyone look like a beautiful siren or powerful merman. Mermaiding (or mer-swimming, to allow for the growing number of mermen) is an awesome workout, and amazing fun. These mermaids and mermen learn to swim and dive without any goggles or masks, to hold their breath for longer and longer periods of time (several minutes), and to perform beautiful flowing turns, tricks and twirls underwater.
The mer-community is so large now that they are having their first convention this August in Las Vegas. The World Mermaid Awards will feature the largest pool party ever, with everyone in tails! Guests will include the world famous mermaid, Hannah Fraser, and the cast of the TV show H2O.
Many mermaids say that swimming like a real sea creature through the water changes their life. Mermaiding is so addictive, that you will never want to swim as a human again.
